The bodies of 18 refugees were discovered in a truck in Bulgaria

After the bodies of 18 people, including a child, were found inside a truck in Bulgaria, the police announced the arrest of four suspects.

The truck, which was abandoned near a village near Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, appears to have been carrying illegal immigrants, police said.

Thirty-four people, including five children, were rescued from the truck and sent to regional hospitals for treatment.

The police believe that most of these people are citizens of Afghanistan and were supposed to travel to Serbia illegally.

According to Bulgarian Health Minister Asen Medzhidev, these people were suffering from prolonged hunger, cold and high humidity.

Mr. Medzhidev said: “The people trapped inside the truck had a lack of oxygen. The weather was cold and humid and they had not eaten for several days.”

Bulgarian media have described this incident as the deadliest accident related to human trafficking in this country.

Bulgaria is one of the routes of illegal immigration to EU member states.

Human rights organizations have accused the Bulgarian government of mistreating asylum seekers.
